I was invited into this project to build a fireplace door system. When I realized how large the doors would have to be I suggested a change. My design involved lifting the door vertically with the assistance of counter weights. By constructing a simple transmission I was able to operate the door from an adjacent crank handle, keeping my client a comfortable distance from the moving weight. My wife pointed out that a truly clever person would fit the fire screen with a similar system. I did so, placing its crank on the other side of the fireplace. The door is fitted with ceramic insulation to preserve heat and prevent warp. The outer face is annealed copper. I found these modeled colors to blend best with this home’s interior.
